WAYS TO KEEP DEVOTIONS FRESH THIS SUMMER:

* SET GOALS FOR THE SUMMER - "I'm going to read through the gospels, I'm going to spend at least 10 minutes reading each day, etc." (keep your goals reasonable)
* CHANGE YOUR LOCATION - try doing your devos in your backyard, in your treehouse, or even in your pool
* ADD A BOOK - try reading a Christian book along with your bible reading
* INDEX CARDS - Write a verse from your devotional on an index card each morning and carry it with you all day
* TRY A NEW TRANSLATION - try reading the New Living Translation or something else more readable
* ASK PASTOR DAVID FOR A BIBLE HANDBOOK - which briefly explains each passage in the bible as you're reading along
* PICK UP A DEVOTIONAL BOOK OR AN OUR DAILY BREAD - available at the church
* FIND A DEVO BUDDY - a friend who can call you each day to talk about what you've been reading in the word
* START UP A BIBLE STUDY - meet weekly with your friends or siblings to talk about what you've been reading

Calvary Chapel has a Castle / Retreat Center in Austria. Over the summer they run retreats and conferences for local churches and missionary organizations. Their vision is to "serve those who serve the king" and "refresh the saints."

Students 16 years & up can apply to serve at the castle along side their staff for 1-3 months over the summer.

we made it! we're back from mexico and are now in san diego. 8hrs of traveling today and 9 more ahead of us tomorrow. praise the Lord. it's been an unbelievable trip.

Mexico Update // Day 4

hola amigos!!! we're doing great! the trip has been wonderful. here's a quick snapshot.

Saturday: we arrived in the afternoon and got a chance to meet the Marrs & their Youth Ministry.

Sunday: we served their children's ministry, served a nacho lunch to the church and got a great chance to really fellowship with their church. In the afternoon we traveled to a small rural community in the area called "San Francisco" and played amazing soccer & reached out to the community through our puppet team. Afterwards, Pastor Joel from the Marr's church got up and preached the gospel to the families. To end our outreach we distributed groceries to the families in the area that our team had bagged in the afternoon.

Monday: we got up and worked hard today doing service projects for 2 different families, a nursing home, and the church... painting, cleaning, sorting supplies, etc. The kids worked so hard and did a great job connecting with the kids in the neighborhoods.

Everyone is healthy and things seem to be going UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING.

Please pray for continued favor with the community and protection. Tomorrow, more service projects and the nursing homes. Wednesday, projects & children's ministry. Thursday, an all church fellowship event (chili-cookoff status).

what's up friends & family?!? thanks for praying. we're here @ horizon christian fellowship in san diego, after a long day of driving. we had a blast in the cars, hit a little chipotle/in n out action for lunch, made it to sd, ate pizza for dinner, had a sweet night of worship and personal devos to set our hearts on Jesus. pray for us.

tomorrow we hit the border, and then set up headquarters in vicente guerrero. we'll post more updates as we get the chance. check out pics from today on our facebook page. click the link on the top right of this page.

Due to health code regulations, a potluck is simply off the table (hah, much pun intended). But we're finding our way around regulations by inviting anyone who wants to help us make dinner; we'll be making the food on site in our "up to code" kitchen from 3pm-5:45pm. So if you'd like to come down early and help, sign up in the high school room.

Otherwise, dinner starts around 6pm. Bring a dessert if you'd like (has to be store bought). We'll have dinner and discipleship.

UNITE is hitting the slopes! Saturday 2.27.10 we're meeting at the church 5:45am (leaving at 6am) and heading up to Dodge Ridge ski resort for a day of fellowship and fun. We'll spend the day up there (bring your own lunch or cash to buy up there) and head back when the lifts close, which should put us back to the church by 6pm.

ONE WORSHIP is back! We're joining other youth ministries in town on Wednesday 9.30.09 for a time of combined worship and prayer. We'll meet at Calvary Chapel at our usual time (6:30pm) and then carpool to Laloma Grace Brethren Church in downtown Modesto. We should be back to the church around 8:15pm. Come joins us for a little Video and Q&A action on Sunday 9/13 in both of our morning Bibles studies at UNITE. We'll be watching a series of videos produced by Answers In Genesis which present solid scientific evidence for the fact of our world having it's origins in a Creator God. Each video clip is about 5 minutes long and we'll be following up each clip with an opportunity for a little Q&A.

Oh, and we couldn't call it Ken Ham And Eggs without throwing some GREEN EGGS & HAM in along with all the action. (other breakfast munchies will be provided) So come hungry for some intense apologetics and breakfast.

We run GROUPS as a part of our WEDNESDAYS @ UNITE September through May. We break up into small groups: guys with guys, gals with gals to get into the Word together, share prayer requests, and pray for each other. Here's a quick glimpse at Wednesday nights through the school year:

At our 8:30am and 10:45am Sunday Bible studies, we'll be looking at the letter of the Apostle Paul to the church of Colosse. It's kind of cheesy, but the best way I can explain this book is that Paul wants Jesus to become "COLOSALLY SUPREME" in our hearts. In a day where there's a lot of confusion about Jesus, where even Christians aren't quite clear on the significance of Jesus, this is a needed and exciting book. Come check it out with us Sunday mornings.

PROJECTS Registration

This summer, UNITE hsf and THRIVE jh are teaming up to launch: the PROJECTS! Our vision is to raise up teams of Jr. High and High School students that will engage in “detour-like” ministry opportunities during a four week time frame. From mid-June to mid-July multiple teams will be sent out from our Youth Ministry to do: nursing home visitation & street evangelism.

Details for this outreach are included in the packet below.

Just a quick reminder. Next week (4/8) we'll be heading across town to ONE WORSHIP as a Youth Ministry. We'll still meet here at Calvary Chapel at our usual Wednesday night time, 6:30pm. And then we will caravan to Eastridge Community Church for a combined worship service with other Youth Ministries in town. All permission slips are due today! All you snow fans, come on out with us to Dodge Ridge for a day on the slopes. We we'll be leaving the church parking lot at 6am Saturday 3/7/09 to caravan up the mountain. On Wednesday nights, we've been studying through the book of 1st Samuel. And, praise the Lord, we had an amazing response to last night's invitation for people to receive the life changing gift of Jesus' baptism with the Holy Spirit. The altar was filled with guys and gals seeking the Lord for the power to be a witness to Jesus in their lives, looking for that same life-changing work of the Spirit which Samuel describes to Saul as power that will "turn you into another man." (1 Samuel 10:6)

Well for those of you who are interested, I mentioned that I would post some of my notes from that Bible study, so here they are:

ALL NIGHT PRAYER // this friday 8pm-2am

Come represent UNITE at CC Modesto's All Night Prayer gathering. This will be an amazing time of worship and prayer. Intimidated by the thought of praying all night? Don't be. Check it out! We'll be spending some time in worship. And then we'll break up into small groups for each hour or so while cycling through worship, a brief intro to a topic of prayer, 10 minutes or so of praying in small groups and then repeating that all again. We'll do that for a block of about an our, and then break up into different small groups. You've got to come. Here's the outline for the night:

8pm-10pm Worship + Directed Prayer
10pm - 11pm FOOD!
11pm - 2am Worship + Directed Prayer

Come on out this Wednesday and join us in our desire to be MOVED by the Lord's compassion for the lost. We really feel that the Lord wants to grow us in our love and boldness toward the lost friends + family that we have, even the strangers that we meet.

As a part of our Wednesday Night Small Group Ministry we're spending the rest of the summer seeking the Lord for His heart and power to reach the lost, and to become more effective for Him in sharing this amazing gospel and salvation that He's given to us.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT!!! Come join us this Wednesday. We kick things off with some intercessory prayer @ 5:45pm in the high school room. A NAME (finally!!!)

So we've got ourselves a new name + website. The name comes from what we feel the Lord has really called us to as a ministry: to connect students with Jesus, then unite them together as the body of Christ in fellowship, and finally to then disciple them in becoming guys + gals who bring others to Jesus. We've always wanted a name that expressed our desire to grow closer to Jesus, and would also capture the "family vibe" that we've really felt so strongly about developing in the high school fellowship.
